The London Borough of Kingston upon Thames is located South of Luton airport a distance of 57 miles that would take around an hour by taxi via the M1, M25 and M4. It is located in southwest London and has a population of 160,400 according to 2011 statistics.
The name Kingston means Royal Manor being derived from Cyninges Tun or Cingestune and has had connections with royalty since Anglo-Saxon times when Kings were coronated there. A Royal Charter was first granted to Kingston in 1200 by King John, and in 1965, Queen Elizabeth ll granted another Royal Charter which entitles Kingston to continue to use the title 'Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames'. It was an important area in the Middle Ages and this was largely due to its proximity to the River Thames that was a means used to transport trade in and out of London. During the 18th and 19th Centuries Kingston was thriving being an important staging post for coaches and having industries such as fishing, leather and brewing.
There are plenty of interesting and entertaining places to visit while staying in the borough including the ancient market that is still held in the main town selling produce such as fish, jewellery, exotic foods, local foods and flowers. Having some of the finest scenic walks along the River Thames you can also use the Cycle paths or even take a boat trip to some of the other areas such as Teddington and Richmond. Some other notable attractions include Chessington World of Adventures, Richmond Park, The Coronation Stone, Hampton Court Palace and the Rose Theatre.
